Scrabble Rules
Use your word skills and strategy to build high-scoring words! Here’s how to play Scrabble, the classic crossword game for clever clogs and word wizards.

What's in the Box?
- Scrabble board (15x15 grid with bonus squares)
- 100 letter tiles (with point values)
- 4 tile racks
- Cloth tile bag
- Pencil and paper for scoring
- Instructions
Setting Up
- Lay out the board and give each player a rack.
- Place all tiles face down in the bag and mix them well.
- Each player draws 7 tiles and places them on their rack.
- Youngest player goes first (or whoever can spell 'QUIZZIFY'? the fastest!).
How to Play
- On your turn, use your tiles to make a word on the board. The first word must cover the centre star square. All subsequent words must connect to tiles already on the board.
- Score your word by adding up the points on each letter, plus any bonus squares used (double/triple letter/word scores). Write your total on the scoresheet.
- Draw new tiles from the bag so you always have 7 on your rack (if there are enough left).
- You may swap some or all of your tiles instead of playing a word, but you lose your turn.
- Acceptable words: Standard dictionaries, no proper nouns, no abbreviations, no hyphens/apostrophes, and no foreign words (unless in the dictionary!).
- If another player challenges your word, check the dictionary. If your word is invalid, you lose your turn!
- Play continues clockwise until all tiles are used or no more moves can be made.
Tip: Save your high-value letters (Q, Z, X, J) for double or triple letter/word squares for mega points!
Scoring & Winning
- When the game ends, each player subtracts the value of their unplayed tiles from their score.
- If you use all 7 tiles in one go ('bingo'?), you get a 50-point bonus!
- The player with the highest score wins and earns ultimate bragging rights!
Classic House Rules (Optional, for Extra Fun)
- Speed Play: Use a timer for each turn (1-2 minutes) to keep the game moving.
- Theme Night: Only words in a chosen category count (e.g. animals, food, etc.).
- Wildcard Challenge: Blank tiles can represent any letter, but must be declared when played.
Did you know? Scrabble was invented in 1938, and there are official Scrabble tournaments around the world!
Quick Reference
- Players: 2–4
